Raising Standards in Expert Witness Training

Introduction

Since 1996, we have provided specialist training for expert witnesses. Our four-stage programme prepares witnesses to produce high-quality expert reports, attend meetings of experts and conferences with instructing lawyers, and to give high-quality oral evidence in court or other tribunals. We offer the programme as both public workshops and in-house events.

The Programme

Central to all expert evidence is the expert report or proof of evidence. The parties to a dispute will base much of their assessment of the case on expert evidence and negotiations will be based on the strength of the expert evidence. As the case moves forward through the court process, the ability to analyse the evidence of opposing parties and to prepare for giving oral evidence become paramount. Finally, the skills of giving clear and robust oral evidence, often under the intense pressure of cross-examination, will be critical in influencing the decision of the court or tribunal.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Our one-day workshops include 6 hours of CPD directly relevant to expert witness work (Half-day workshops include 3 hours of CPD material). We issue attendance certificates that detail the topic covered and total attendance hours. The quality of our presentations is recognised by the Expert Witness Institute (where we provide both introductory and advanced expert report writing workshops) and by the Institute of Chartered Accountants Forensic Group where we provide Expert Report Writing and Preparation for Giving Evidence workshops for its annual conference.

We await the launch of the accreditation process of the Expert Witness Institute, as we consider this to be the proper body to authorise CPD for expert witness training and fully expect that this will contribute useful ideas to the learning process.
