Introduction

Pressure is a normal and healthy part of life. However, unhealthy, sustained levels of pressure can cause fatigue, illness and burnout. The challenge for individuals and organisations is to find the optimal amount of pressure in which energy, performance and wellness, both at work and at home, is enhanced.

Course Content

• What stops us managing the pace? A physiological perspective on the impact of technology and today's working patterns
• What is and isn't stress? What is the optimal amount of pressure for you ?
• Understanding the 'stress barometer' - enhancing personal awareness, self-diagnosis and spotting early signs of stress in others, recognising when stress becomes 'medical'
• Energy - a key consideration in managing the pace. The physiology of energy, fatigue and burnout
• Introducing a practical Energy toolkit including:

Physical resilience: Strengthening the foundations of your energy - Increasing energy and wellness through exercise, healthy and practical eating habits, optimising sleep quality, relaxation and focusing techniques for work and home, creating healthy work/life balance;

Mental resilience - time management and your energy levels, staying focused under pressure, managing expectations; dealing with lack of control; dealing with uncertainty during change;

Emotional resilience - helpful and unhelpful attitudes and behaviours , creating a positive mindset, dealing with tension, anxiety and worry; managing emotions in the work environment (emotional intelligence), building and strengthening your support networks;

Spiritual resilience: Accessing the greatest source of your energy - Putting what first things first, living life according to your values and beliefs and redressing the balance

Speaker/s

Nerina Ramlakhan PhD is a physiologist who has specialised in maximising individual and organisational performance. After completing her post-doctoral training and research into the effects of lifestyle interventions on the alleviation of mental disorders, she spent five years in corporate health screening before studying organisational psychiatry and psychology at Guys Hospital and beginning organisational consultancy, workshop facilitation and coaching.

As the original founder of BUPA’s Corporate Wellbeing Solutions, she was a regular speaker at many City groups. Since April 2000, she has run her own consultancy and has worked in various industries including insurance, accountancy, legal, management consultancy, various sections of the police services, call centres, investment banking, telecommunications, healthcare, oil, TV, defence, engineering and IT. Nerina also writes for a number of journals including Occupational Health and Police Review Magazine. Nerina works with individuals and organisations motivational management programmes, stress audits and risk assessments, return to work following long-term sickness absence, organisational Wellness surveys focusing on stress and pressure management and burnout prevention.
