IntroductionYouth justice is a specialised and difficult area. It often involves the representation of those who are vulnerable for reasons other than simply their age. The Government’s proposed legislative changes will have a radical impact upon the current youth justice provisions. This lecture is intended to cover the current regime in force, and the proposed changes contained in the Criminal Justice and immigration Bill 2007.Course Content• Remand of youths during criminal process • Representing youths accused of grave crimes • Representing youths with additional vulnerabilities • Review of sentencing provision for youths in the Magistrates’ and Crown Court • Youths who turn 18 before conviction and/or sentence for specified offences. Sentencing young adults (18+) for specified offences. Challenging findings of dangerousness • Changes proposed by the Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill 2007 including the impact upon sentencing provisionsSpeaker/s• BENJAMIN NEWTON (2004) is a criminal defence advocate with experience ranging from the Youth Court to the Court of Appeal. His recent practice has included jury trials for offences of armed robbery, possession with intent to supply class A drugs, sexual assault, and blackmail. He has also been led as junior counsel in regard to a conspiracy to conceal criminal property and a conspiracy to commit burglary, and has expertise in confiscation proceedings under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002. Benjamin's other experience includes appeals to the Crown Court and the Court of Appeal, prison adjudication hearings, licensing matters, and appeals to the Social Security and Child Support Commissioners.• LUCY CORRIN (2001) is a practitioner specialising in Criminal law. Lucy defends for a range of criminal solicitors in the Crown Court in all areas of criminal law both alone and as a junior. Her practice encompasses the full range of criminal offences. Her experience includes cases involving serious violence and conspiracy to commit armed robbery to drugs, firearms and peverting the course of justice. Lucy also undertakes appellate work and continues to represent defendants in complex proceedings in the Magistrates' Court. Book Now |
