Hands on with timber design

Date/s and Location : London 08 & 09 October 2008

Duration : 2 Days
9.30 am - 5 pm Registration at 9 am on Day 1

Introduction

This two day workshop is best suited to structural engineers and practitioners who have had previous design experience to relevant British standards, particularly to BS 5268.

Design situations commonly encountered in design of timber structures are addressed first with a view to expand this series of workshops to further look at other timber products such as trussed rafters and timber bridges.

Participants are advised to bring their own copies of EC5 and calculators as almost all the exmaples will be done in class at their own pace. Extracts from other relevant codes and subject materials and references will be provided with the course materials.

Course Content

Day 1. Design of timber elements with examples to be worked out in class. By Dr. Keerthi Ranasinghe (Senior structural engineer, TRADA Technology)
- Evaluation of loads to EC5
- Evaluation of deflections to EC5
- Design of flexural members to EC5
- Design of compression members to EC5
- Design of joints to EC5
- Design of multiple fastener joints to EC5
- Outline of two complete design examples to EC5

Day 2. Advanced topics in timber design with examples to be worked out in class. By Dr. Hugh Mansfield-Williams (Technical manager, TRADA Technology)
- Accommodating holes and notches and designing for stress concentrations
- Harnessing the strength of structural timber composites
- Vibration design to EC5: challenges and key issues
- Understanding timber panel products

Speaker/s

• KEERTHI KUMARA RANASINGHE, BSc, (Eng., Hons. 1st), Ph.D. (Structural Engineering) is a senior structural engineer for TRADA Technology. He has been involved in design and checking of structural calculations for timber structures and products and helping product certification. He is responsible for the EC5 transition support programs initiated by TRADA Technology. Other areas of specialisation are shear failure of concrete structures, numerical modelling and Finite Element Analysis of Structures, and non destructive testing techniques for structures.

• HUGH DAVID MANSFIELD-WILLIAMS, PhD., BSc., AIWSc., a technical amanger for TRADA Technology. He represents TRADA on BSI committees on timber structures (B525) and timber products (B518).
