Stability of steel framed buildings

Date/s and Location : London 04 November 2008

Duration : 1 Day
9.30 am - 5 pm Registration at 9 am

Introduction

Frame stability concerns the significance of second-order effects and is highlighted as an essential check for all frames in BS 5950. Whilst in many braced frames the effects will not be significant, designers should be confident in using the simple checks to determine frame sensitivity, and the simple rules to allow for such effects.

The course explains the background, but focuses on practical application, with numerical worked examples at each stage.

Course Content

• Second order effects in struts and frames
• The background and theory of frame stability
• The practical application of the BS 5950 rules to:
1. braced frames
2. continuous frames
3. portal frames
• The simple approaches in BS 5950 to allow for second order effects; amplified sway method or Appendix E
