Accommodating movements in concrete structures

Date/s and Location : London 04 November 2008

Duration : Half Day
2 pm - 5.15 pm Registration at 1.30 pm

Introduction

Concrete buildings must be designed for movements due to early thermal contraction, shrinkage, temperature and the immediate and long-term effects of post-tensioning if used.

In this CPD course delegates will understand the types and sources of movement, appreciate the importance of restraints to movements and design to accommodate or mitigate movements using a multi-storey car park as a case study.

Course Content

• Forms of movement
• Sources of movement
• Amounts of movement
• Restraints to movement - and alleviation by creep
• Movement joints
• Calculation example: post-tensioned multi-storey car park
