Introduction

This CPD course provides the latest information relating to the Building Regulations, Codes and Standards as they affect the modern design of low rise masonry houses. It will cover the use of basements as a way of ensuring the better utilisation of land and improving the use of sites with difficult ground conditions. The most recent changes to the Building Regulations will be reviewed as will the changes to BS 5628 Parts 1, 2 & 3. Eurocode 6 will be introduced and innovations in dwelling construction considered.

Speaker/s

• EUR ING PROFESSORS JOHN ROBERTS, Hon DSc BSc(Eng), PhD, CEng, FIStructE, FICE, FBMS, FCMI, FRSA, MICT, Hon MIIE is the Principal of the Technical Innovation Consultancy and Emeritus Professor of Civil Engineering – Kingston University. A Civil Engineering and PHD graduate of London University he has also appointments as Mowlem Professor of Civil Engineering at Kingston University in 1988, for the Cement and Concrete Association, president of the British Masonry Society and the British Cement Association.

• ALAN TOVEY, CEng, FIStructE, ACIArb, MIFS is the Director of Tecnicom Limited, which is an independent consultancy, and Director of the Basement Information Centre. He has very wide industry experience and started his career with the Concrete Section of British Railways Western Region. He then joined a major precast manufacturer where he was involved with both design and construction of a variety of concrete structures. He gained municipal engineering experience and practical design experience of loadbearing brickwork and blockwork with a London Borough Authority. He joined the Cement and Concrete Association in 1973 and subsequently worked with the British Cement Association before setting up his consultancy in 1993. He has extensive experience of work on British Standards and Codes of Practice. His current activities include assessments, expert witness work and technical development activities

• TIM MEALING, Chartered Architect Dipl Arch Hons RIBA ATP. A registered architect, Tim has worked on a wide range of building types from concept to practical completion, and is currently Manager for Architectural Education at The Concrete Centre. Tim spent 11 years as Director of Building Surveying at the College of Estate Management at Reading University, delivering external degree courses. Recently he was a consultant for SEEDA as Technologies Skills Manager investigating modern methods of construction and identifying new construction approaches to increase efficiency and address the skills shortages which are an issue within the industry.
