Introduction

The course combines geotechnical and structural design appropriate for building deep basements, underground stations, cut and cover tunnels and other below ground installations. The course content is structured around case studies and will cover loads and load balance, superstructure load effects, lateral earth pressures, heave, piles, matching loads and resistance, evolution of loads with time, effects of groundwater, techniques of drainage and water proofing. The course will also cover integration of temporary works, wall types and pile types, and structural design of a reinforced concrete enclosure below a building.

Course Content

• Geotechnical data and design
• Typical foundation solutions for basements and structures
• Effects on neighbouring structures and adjacent tunnels
• Structural forces and design standards
• Force balance
• Design interaction with architects, M&E and others
• Case history: King’s Cross Northern Ticket Halls
• Introduction to pile & in-situ retaining wall types
• Construction methodologies
• Specifications, reinforcement, connections & temporary works
• Case studies

Peter specialises in the design of basements and underground structures, both in commercial buildings and in the railway environment.

• Dr PETER INGRAM, BEng, PhD, Senior Geotechnical Engineer, Arup London, is responsible for the geotechnical design of a number of deep and shallow basements both in the UK and overseas. He has particular expertise in the substructure design of large buildings, including those with deep basements and those that interact with railway structures and tunnels.

• Dr PETER BOURNE-WEBB, PhD, MSc, BE, DIC, Chief Geotechnical Engineer, Cementation Foundations Skanska Ltd. At Skanska Peter has a wide ranging brief to review and where possible enhance the approaches used for both bearing pile and retaining wall design and construction.
