Eurocode 5 : timber design

Date/s and Location : London 13 November 2008

Duration : 1 Day
9.30 am - 5 pm Registration at 9 am

Introduction

Eurocode 5 offers opportunities to structural engineers designing in timber. The existing code, BS 5268, is a permissible stress code. The new Eurocode is a Limit State code. In separating the serviceability limit state from the ultimate limit state it presents design in a format consistent with the existing steel and concrete codes but it needs care in use. To ensure a safe design, the code must be applied with care in using the correct load, material and modification factors.

The course will introduce timber engineering and explain the significant parameters in the Eurocode. It will show how to design to Eurocode using the recently published TRADA/IStructE Manual to EC5.

Speaker/s

• Professor RICHARD HARRIS, BSc, CEng, FIStructE, FICE, AIWSc, Part-time Professor of Timber Engineering at the University of Bath. Technical Director with Buro Happold in Bath. Practicing Structural Engineer leading a team of engineers in the design of structures in differing sectors and using differing construction methods and materials. Specialises in the field of Timber Engineering. Wide range of timber engineering projects include the Downland Gridshell and the Savill Building (winner of the 2007 IStructE Supreme Award). Chaired the Task Group for the Institution of Structural Engineers, for the IStructE/TRADA Manual for the Design of Timber Building Structures to Eurocode 5.
